Port-to-Port shipping covers the ocean transit only, from origin port to destination port. Door-to-Door is a comprehensive service that includes pickup, export customs, ocean freight, import customs clearance, and final delivery to your door. Port-to-Port is for businesses that can manage their own customs clearance and inland transportation. For Amazon sellers, Door-to-Port (or Door-to-Door) is often preferred to avoid handling complex destination port logistics.
FCL (Full Container Load) means your goods fill an entire container, while LCL (Less than Container Load) means you share container space with other shippers. FCL is cheaper per unit for bulk shipments and has lower damage risk. LCL is suitable for smaller shipments (e.g., below 15 CBM) as you only pay for the space you use. Choose FCL if you have enough volume; choose LCL for smaller quantities.
For major routes like Asia to the US West Coast, typical port-to-port transit times are 15–25 days. Add 3–7 days for possible port congestion during peak seasons (Q4). For a total door-to-FBA warehouse timeline from China to the US, expect around 28 to 45 days.
The essential documents for ocean freight include: Bill of Lading (B/L) as proof of ownership and contract, Commercial Invoice, Packing List. Additional requirements per country include: ISF filing and Customs Bond for the US, SABER certificate for Saudi Arabia, EORI number for the EU. For Amazon FBA shipments, FNSKU and carton labels are mandatory.
Demurrage is a fee charged when your container sits inside the port terminal beyond the allowed free days. Detention is charged when you hold onto the carrier’s container outside the port after the free days. To avoid these costs, pick up your cargo and return the empty container within the free time (typically 5–7 days).
The Bill of Lading is the most critical document in ocean freight. It serves three functions: a receipt for the cargo, the contract of carriage, and the title of ownership for the goods. Only the holder of the original B/L can take delivery. Without it, you cannot claim your cargo. Common types include “Straight B/L” (non-negotiable) and “Order B/L” (negotiable).
